General Information
These are frequently asked topics I have received in the past. Click the plus sign to expand the explanation
1. I have never had a professional massage. What should I expect?
The following is an explanation of what to expect from a Roosen Wellness massage. While massage is tailored by client, the general experience will be the same.
If you have chosen an Out-call service (An out call massage therapy service means that I will travel to you). The massage table folds neatly into a carrying case and I will generally have a back pack or gym bag with me as well. If you choose an In-Call service it means you will travel to one of my locations.
The first meeting will include a general questionnaire of your medical history. There are certain medical conditions that are a contraindication for massage… meaning it is not advised to massage someone with conditions that can be worsened by massage or may require client positioning changes for client’s comfort and health.
As you are completing the form I will be setting up the massage table and associated items used for massage. A typical setup will include massage table, face cradle, fitted sheet, top sheet (or drape), and a face cradle cover. Additionally, I include a small speaker and connect to my phone to play music of your choice during the massage. Typically, I will use non-scented lotion or oil based on client preference.
We will discuss your expectation for the massage and draping for your comfort and safety. I’ll leave to use your sink to wash my hands while you disrobe to your comfort level and get on the massage table and cover with the drape. When ready I will reenter the massage area and start the massage. I will check as needed to be sure the pressure used is appropriate and not uncomfortable for your relaxation.
Generally, we start with you face down (prone position) to work your shoulders, back, arms, legs, feet. Once the back of the body is done, I’ll have you turn over (supine position – face up). As you turn you will remain draped so you are not exposed. The goal is not to expose any area that is covered by a bikini bottom or speedo swimsuit. After turning over I work from feet up to head. I sanitize my hands after feet work. I will finally finish with scalp / face massage. Once the session is over, I will leave the room and wash my hands. At which time you can get up from the table and dress as appropriate. We will have a discussion regarding the massage and I will pack up my table and supplies. I accept cash, Venmo, PayPal, and major credit cards. I use Square to process credit card transactions. Once the transaction is complete, we can select the next appointment time.
As a general rule, most people will find it beneficial to stay well hydrated for 24 – 48 hours after a massage to flush toxins released during the massage out of the body. A relaxation massage should not hurt. There may be some discomfort but should be tolerable.
2. I don't have any pain anywhere, what benefit would I receive If I got a massage
Most people receive massage for general relaxation. The body is designed to have a time of work or movement during the day and recovery (rest, digestion, and restoration) during the evening. Many report that a sense of relaxation, better sleep, and waking up refreshed after a relaxation massage. Massage may help with restoration as muscle massage helps to reduce toxins built up in the muscles during work.
Some people are naturally body aware. They will know if something doesn’t “feel right” but can’t determine themselves what is wrong. While massage therapists do not diagnose or replace visits to your health care professional, there are some common muscular and connective tissue issues that can be reduced or eliminated with massage. Often times daily jobs cause muscle strain. Use of computers, mobile devices, and desk work will impact neck, chest, and shoulder muscles. Sitting all day may cause issues with lower back pain or leg pain.
3. I am uncomfortable with a male massage therapist working on me
I understand that there are clients that may be uncomfortable with male massage therapist. Know that I have been trained as a massage therapist with the same hours of training as a female massage therapist. I do offer chair massage where the client is fully clothed during the massage if you would like to try my services with little skin to skin contact. Once comfortable with me as a therapist, we can move to a more traditional massage or future massage sessions. If you as the client are still uncomfortable, I have female therapist contacts as a referral. I would prefer you be comfortable as a client and receive the benefits of massage.
4. I am concerned about my body reactions to massage and dont want to be embarrassed or uncomfortable.
There are two common type of reactions that may occur. Often massage will release toxins from the body and elicit the need to urinate or void. If the need to use the restroom occurs, feel free to communicate with me and we can take a break.
Sometimes there are emotional releases in the form of crying or laughing. Know that these are all based on clients’ bodies and are all natural. Emotional releases are ok, and we can deal with the result.
Sometimes males have an erection. Males having an erection during massage is a physiological response and not sexual response. Draping is intended to provide comfort and safety for the client.
The intention of massages from Roosen Wellness are therapeutic and / or relaxation and do not include any expectation of a sexual nature.
5. Your prices are higher than I can find on Groupon or other discount websites
There is value in my massage work as a recipient. My prices are set as a combination of Roosen Wellness, Facility arrangements (for in call massages), and the value of my years of experience. While I choose not to use Groupon or other discount websites, I do occasionally offer discounts or combination packages. If you are booking with a code mentioned in the Speicals section of this website be sure to mention the code when booking the appointment.
6. My boss does occasional employee appreciation days. Could you come do a chair massage?
The opportunity would need to be coordinated with your company’s events person (usually in human resources department). I normally will do a block of time with people signing up for 10 or 15 min time slots ahead of the event day. My fee can be negotiated based on number of employees receiving chair massage.
Testimonials
“I love how John asks you exactly whats you want him to work on. Hes very professional, and always changes the enviornment to what makes you relax (music, insense smell, lighting, etc) He really makes the whole experience all about the client“
“Thanks for squeezing me in with less than an hours notice.”
“Very nice setting it was relaxing and John is very skilled! I was so relaxed after a bit that I fell asleep! I would definitely get another one!”
“Thank you! The massage was exactly what I needed. I will definitely recommend John Roosen to my friends and family.”
I had a massage from a different masseuse a few days before which left me incredibly sore and still tense. John was very considerate, and was able to relax the sore muscles in my shoulders and upper back tremendously while also easing the soreness from the previous masseuse, delivering a far superior experience.
